Estepona has reinvented itself as ‘the garden city of the Costa del Sol’: more than 50 murals by international artists decorate its streets, the squares are full of flowers all year and the old quarter is the most authentic on the whole western Costa del Sol. El Cristo Beach, with a Blue Flag and 1,100 metres of sand beside the marina, is the perfect starting point for exploring a town that has found its own identity.
Getting there
By bus: the Marbella–Algeciras service stops in Estepona; the coach station is 15 minutes from the promenade. Local buses run to the marina. By car: paid parking at Estepona marina (€3/day) or metered parking on Paseo Marítimo Pedro Manrique. In summer, arrive before 10am to park nearby.

The fish auction at Estepona marina
On Tuesday and Friday mornings, the Estepona fish market sells the day’s catch directly to the public. Prawns, anchovies, sole and hake landed at dawn, at quayside prices. It’s one of the best food experiences on the western coast and practically no guidebook mentions it. The marina is a five-minute walk from the beach.
