Estepona has reinvented itself as ‘the garden city of the Costa del Sol’: more than 50 murals by international artists decorate its streets, the squares are full of flowers all year and the old quarter is the most authentic on the whole western Costa del Sol. El Cristo Beach, with a Blue Flag and 1,100 metres of sand beside the marina, is the perfect starting point for exploring a town that has found its own identity.
Getting there
By bus: the Marbella–Algeciras service stops in Estepona; the coach station is 15 minutes from the promenade. Local buses run to the marina. By car: paid parking at Estepona marina (€3/day) or metered parking on Paseo Marítimo Pedro Manrique. In summer, arrive before 10am to park nearby.

The fish auction at Estepona marina
On Tuesday and Friday mornings, the Estepona fish market sells the day’s catch directly to the public. Prawns, anchovies, sole and hake landed at dawn, at quayside prices. It’s one of the best food experiences on the western coast and practically no guidebook mentions it. The marina is a five-minute walk from the beach.
What to do nearby
Estepona’s old quarter and the Urban Mural Route. The Estepona Orchid House (free for residents, reduced rate for visitors). Boat trips from the marina to Gibraltar and the African coast in season.
Places to stay nearby
Hotels along the promenade and seafront apartments at more affordable prices than Marbella. Estepona is steadily gaining a reputation as a high-quality alternative destination.

The verdict
Estepona is the surprise of the western Costa del Sol. More authentic than Marbella, with an excellent beach and a town that has staked its future on street art and market-fresh food. Worth far more than a beach visit.

What makes El Cristo different
Estepona Tourism describes it as a sheltered cove close to the fishing and leisure harbour. Its shape can reduce exposure to wind in some conditions, but calm water is never guaranteed. Follow the flag and lifeguard instructions on the day.
Accessibility and facilities
The council information lists reserved parking, accessible changing rooms and toilets, showers and amphibious equipment, plus assisted bathing for people with reduced mobility in summer. These services are seasonal and may require set hours or prior arrangements; confirm availability before travelling.
Shade and comfort
There is a wooded area nearby, but shade cannot be guaranteed. Bring sun protection and keep walkways, ramps and reserved spaces clear.
Combining the beach and marina
The harbour is a short distance away and has restaurants and leisure facilities. It is easy to combine the beach with a walk, but swimming areas must be kept separate from port operations. See our guides to family beaches and accessible beaches.
Frequently asked questions
Is the water always calm?
No. The cove may be more sheltered than an open beach, but wind, waves and currents change.
Is assisted bathing available all year?
The municipal source specifies summer. Confirm dates, hours and availability before visiting.
