Golf on the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol is also known as the Costa del Golf, and it isn’t an empty slogan: the stretch between Málaga and Manilva holds more than seventy courses, the highest density in mainland Europe. The reason is simple: you can play here twelve months a year.

Why here

• Climate: over 300 days of sunshine a year and mild winter temperatures. December and January are high season for golf, not low.
• Density: you could play a different course every day for two months without repeating.
• Variety: from championship courses that have hosted European Tour events to affordable nine-hole layouts.
• Setting: many courses have views of both the sea and the mountains at once.

The areas

• Marbella and Benahavís: the heart of golf on the coast, with the greatest concentration and the most prestigious courses.
• Estepona and Manilva: newer courses, good value and less pressure on tee times.
• Mijas, Fuengirola and Benalmádena: central, well connected, with options for every level.
• Málaga city and the Axarquía: fewer courses but also less demand and more contained prices.

What it costs

Green fees vary enormously: from around €40-60 at modest courses or in afternoon slots, up to €150-250 at championship courses in high season. Multi-day packages and advance booking bring the overall cost down considerably.

When to play

October to May is the best season: ideal temperatures and courses in good condition. In July and August it’s too hot to play at midday — you tee off first thing or late afternoon — but prices drop substantially. It’s the mirror image of the beach season, which is exactly why golf keeps the coast’s hotels full in winter.

Practical advice

• Book tee times ahead, especially from February to May.
• Many courses require a federated handicap; check before you go.
• Clubs and buggies can be hired at practically all of them.
• If you’re travelling specifically to play, hotel + green fee packages work out noticeably cheaper than booking separately.

And after the round

One of the pleasures of this coast is that you can finish eighteen holes and be on the beach fifteen minutes later. Combine it with an afternoon at Nagüeles or lunch at one of the beach bars in the area.
